For Bio

Jim Kilgus

Jim Kilgus serves as Co-Director of Bands at Mauldin Middle school. Ensembles include Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Bands and Wind Ensemble. Bands under his direction have received Excellent and Superior ratings at the SCBDA Concert Performance Assessment, Carowinds Festival of Music, Heritage Festivals, and Festival Disney. In 2012, the Mauldin Middle School Wind Ensemble was featured at the South Carolina Music Educators Association Conference.

Mr. Kilgus has been a band director in Greenville County since 1991 and at Mauldin Middle School since 2004.

Mr. Kilgus received a Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Furman University and a Master’s degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music in Conducting and Music Education. A sought after judge, clinician, and speaker, Mr. Kilgus has a highly respected reputation for exceptional teaching and advocacy of music education. His professional affiliations include Phi Beta Mu, the National Bandmaster’s Fraternity, the National Association for Music Education (NAfME), and the South Carolina Band Directors Association (SCBDA). Mr. Kilgus is also the recipient of the National Band Association’s Citation of Excellence for “outstanding contributions to bands and band music.”

In addition to his school duties, Mr. Kilgus has been a conductor with the Carolina Youth Symphony since 1991. Mr. Kilgus resides in Mauldin, SC with his wife Tammie and daughter Rebekah.. His son, Dr. Taylor Massey,is principal clarinet of the Augusta Symphony.

Julie Poston

Julie Poston serves as Co-Director of Bands at Mauldin Middle school. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from Furman University in 2004 and her Master’s degree in Music Education from the University of South Carolina in 2006. Ms. Poston is a member of the South Carolina Band Director’s Association, the National Association for Music Education, and Sigma Alpha Iota. She is a National Board Certified teacher and is a recipient of the Citation of Excellence from the National Band Association.

Ms. Poston has taught band at Mauldin Middle School since 2006. Ensembles include Beginning, Intermediate and Advanced Bands and Wind Ensemble. Bands under her direction have received Excellent and Superior ratings at the SCBDA Concert Performance Assessment, Carowinds Festival of Music, Heritage Festivals, and Festival Disney. In 2012, the Mauldin Middle School Wind Ensemble was featured at the South Carolina Music Educators Association Conference.

In addition to her duties at Mauldin Middle, Ms. Poston serves as the Coordinator for the School District of Greenville County Honor Bands and serves on the schools SIC committee. She serves as a woodwind clinician around the Upstate. 

Ms. Poston lives in Greer with her beautiful 6 year old daughter, Caroline.
